Styrsöbolaget in the south archipelago and in the harbour

Styrsöbolaget in the south archipelago and in the harbour on the Göta Älv river.

The boat traffic in the archipelago and on the river dates back to 1860. The current AB Göteborg – Styrsö Skärgårdstrafik was founded in 1969 by the City of Gothenburg and the municipality of Styrsö. In 1974 the City of Gothenburg was the sole owner until the sale of the company in the summer of 2000. Styrsöbolaget is since January 2004 owned by Veolia Transport Sverige AB.

Styrsöbolaget employs 65 annual workers. During the summer there is about 25 additional summer staff.

The archipelago boats

Styrsöbolaget operates the traffic under licence of Västtrafik, who is the PTA (public transport authority) also responsible for the tram-, train- and bus traffic in the region of Västra Götaland.

During the winter there are approximately 120 000 passengers travelling every month. Summertime, during July, there can be up to 260 000 passengers when sun and bath draw tourists to the islands and the sea. Totally per year there are about 1,9 million passengers.

During the winter timetable five boats normally operate the traffic, Silvertärnan, Skarven, Vesta, Vipan and Ylva. They are manned by 13 crews. When any of the boats need to be replaced in the traffic due to maintenance or for other reasons, Fröja goes into traffic. During the summer timetable, Fröja operates with an own timetable manned by three crews.

The ticket office and the maintenance workshop at Saltholmen give service both to the boats and the crew as well as to the passengers.

Cargo and car ferries

Goods are mainly transported by Göta II, vehicles are mainly transported by the car ferry Ärlan. The cargo traffic is operated under licence of the City of Gothenburg, the traffic authority (Trafikkontoret). The traffic is subsidized with 65 %. The remaining part is paid by the cargo fees.

Approximately 2 000 vehicle and 6 000 tonnes of cargo are transported per year. Motor traffic is not allowed in the islands. To be able to bring vehicles you need an exemption from the district of Styrsö.

Göta II and Ärlan are manned by three crews. In case of maintenance or extra traffic there is Älv-Vira. Älv-Vira can also be used as a passenger boat when using a passenger module.

Älvsnabben

Älvsnabben started in 1990 as a part of the transformation of the old shipyard area, at the northern riverside, into residential buildings, schools, offices and lighter industry. Älvsnabben operates between Lilla Bommen and Klippan every 30 minutes. Rosenlund and Lindholmspiren are operated every 10 minute in peak hours, and every 15 minutes during the off peak.

There are approximately 50 000-90 000 passengers travelling every month depending on the period of the year, which equals to about 860 000 passengers per years. The traffic is operated under licence of Västtrafik.

The traffic is operated by three boats, Älvsnabben 3, 4 and 5 who are manned by eight crews.
